What are City Tour Menus?
PRESS RELEASE: St. James, NY - May 16, 2005
Three adventurous Long Island foodies will soon be embarking on an ambitious odyssey to bring authentic regional American cuisine home to Long Island. The trio - Alan Kelley, Philippe Corbet and Robert Mack - managing partner, executive chef, and wine/beverage manager, respectively, of Oscar’s of St. James, will showcase their culinary findings via a program called “City Menus,” which will be offered at Oscar’s throughout the year.
Each month, the trio will travel to one culinary region of America for a three-day whirlwind tour. When they return from their tasting tour, they will create a three-course menu which will reflect the unique ingredients, styles, cooking techniques and presentations of the highlighted region. They’re also keeping a “Chef’s Journal” of their travels, which they will post on the restaurant’s website, www.oscarsofstjames.com. Every new City Menu will kick off with a special Sunday Dinner featuring the new menu and a wine or other beverage paired with the dinner. The adventurers will then speak about their experiences in the city/region and discuss how the menu reflects the region’s unique cultural history. After the first night, that month’s City Menu will be offered as a daily special in addition to Oscar’s regular menu.
First stop is Baltimore, where Kelley, Corbet and Mack will embark on a search for the perfect soft shell crab. The Baltimore menu will kick off on June 12 with a Sunday Dinner beginning at 4:30 p.m. with champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Following Baltimore will be Charleston, SC for Low Country cuisine; then on to Miami and Santa Fe. Fall and winter will bring the trio to Boston just in time for clam chowder; then Seattle, where they hope to search out for a king crab to crown. San Francisco, San Diego and the cuisine of Southern California will follow; then on to Memphis to search for authentic Southern barbecue. New Orleans is on the itinerary, of course, just in time for Oscar’s diners to celebrate Mardi Gras. Spring will bring the culinary travelers to Denver to explore Native American and cowboy cuisine; then Louisville - just in time to sample some mint juleps and Kentucky derby fare. Honolulu is the last planned stop for 2005.
America is a big place, and more cities are planned for 2006.
