About Us
Oscar ’s of St. James opened it’s doors in the summer of 2004 to enthusiastic reviews and neighborhood cheers. Voted one of the “Stars of 2004” by Newsday, Oscar’s made an immediate impact on the Long Island dining scene with very positive reviews in both The New York Times and Newsday. The restaurant’s first Zagat Survey write-up offered "high marks to the ‘creative’ fare and ‘outstanding’ service."
Oscar’s combines old-fashioned hospitality with sophisticated New American cuisine. The restaurant is the brainchild of Alan Kelley, a veteran of several highly successful and critically acclaimed boutique restaurant groups. Armed with a vision for Oscar’s, Kelley assembled a team which set out to create a restaurant where great food is served without pretense, by friendly and knowledgeable people. Guests at Oscar’s of St. James are treated like guests in a gracious home, with one notable exception: this is not your mother’s American cooking!
Oscar’s menu offers familiar favorites with creative twists. The result is an array of dishes that play upon the delicious melting pot of regional and global influences found in American cuisine. When the New York Times’ Joanne Starkey visited Oscar’s, she found that “All entrees hit the spot.” Newsday’s Peter Gianotti offered compliments as well, commenting that “a jumbo lump crab cake is excellent, savory and moist, paired with a jalapeno-spiked slaw and avocado and ‘jamaican jerk’ aioli for some extra spark.” And Long Island Press reviewer Ron Biegel was “won over” by Grandma’s molasses laquered bbq flat-iron steak served with creamed corn griddle cakes and mixed cabbage slaw.
Oscar’s unusual wine pricing policy of standard retail plus a nominal corkage fee is an outstanding opportunity for diners to enjoy high quality wines at reasonable prices. Robert Mack has carefully refined the restaurant’s selections of new world, old world, and “hard to get” wines.
Oscar’s crisply casual summerhouse style is the perfect backdrop for a relaxing meal. The vintage building, formerly part of an early 20th century beach community, was completely renovated inside and out. The result is a Nantucket-style beach house, complete with Adirondack chairs and beach grass outside. Inside, striped tablecloths, airy white walls, and wicker lounge furniture complete the picture. |
